TuttiFruttiNaturals.com

After learning about the many difficulties with sound and Flash while working at SpliceMusic.com, I was contracted as a Flash audio consultant for Cloetta Fazer’s Tutti Frutti Naturals Website. Apart from some general tips and tricks, I also realized the server-side MP3 song mixdown in Java.

I’ve moved!

After an extraordinary four-and-a-half years of living in Catalonia’s capital Barcelona, I’ve moved back to Helsinki!

I’m currently busy working at Fake Graphics and can’t accept that many freelance work offers anymore… However, I’m still happy to hear about interesting projects (preferably audio work), so don’t hesitate to contact me.

NunnaUuniShop.com released

Crankshaft was commissioned to execute the technical production of the tailor-made retail store sites for NunnaUuni. The site uses AJAX techniques for fast page updates, a search engine for NunnaUuni products, and a back-end that supports several language versions and customized views for the retailers, where they can access and update only the data that’s relevant to their specific site.

H.E.I.N.O.L.A. – Summer in the Wild

I created an industrial symphony kinda soundscape for the art exhibition opening of my friends Juha Fiilin and Elina Orpana. See the flyer to the right.

This is what lecool barcelona had to say:

Finnish expatriate artists and designers Elina Orpana http://elinaO.com and partner Juha Fiilin http://fiilin.com launch their first exhibit dedicated to Heinola, a lovely little Finnish town in the middle of nowhere, and Helsinki. In a 3 part expo: 1- Lago Melodías- with avant garde artist and Heinola native Mikko Karvonen, we see how lakeside ripples and cross-sectioned tree trunk lines are converted to sound in an otherwise soundless environment 2-“Amistad”- reflects on the Finnish national pastime of love and respect for nature and 3- “Hell Sin K”- an exposé on the darker side of Finnish nightlife in the capital, and it isn’t very pretty what a town without pity can do. It’s not all tree-hugging apparently. Yet another “le cool experience” to invite everybody you know. Be there or be square.

These are the photos used to generate the sounds:

‘Default Score’ video

A friend of mine did a video of my track ‘Default Score’ in 2003. Unfortunately, due to lack of time, it never got finished. The unfinished preview is available on my MySpace videos page.

Visuals and direction: Zebracolor.fi

A Crankshaft video!

Yesterday I put an unfinished music video of my track ‘Default Score’ on my MySpace videos page. It was made in 2003 by my friend Zebracolor, and it’s been lying on my hard drive ever since. This is an unfinished preview and there will never be a final one. :P Enjoy anyway…!

Splice v2.0 released!

After about 9 months of hard work we finally released the new Splice a few days ago!

www.splicemusic.com

Thanks to my exceptionally talented colleagues and everyone else involved! :-)

So, what’s new? In short: everything. The whole site was both rewritten and designed from scratch. Most interestingly, the new sequencer, written in Flash ActionScript 3, allows the use of real-time synthesizers and audio DSP effects! It’s the coolest thing ever, huh? The sequencer has a fully featured audio engine with a plug-in API quite similar to VST, so adding new plug-ins is just a matter of coding them — we already ported some existing VST plug-ins to AS3, which was a breeze!

Now that the tools for online music making are professional enough, I think I’m gonna spend a lot of time on Splice and make new music there! :P

Splicemusic.com

Well, Splice is more than just a website, it’s 1,5 years of hard work – and there’s hopefully more to come! I’m one of the developers of splicemusic.com, an online music making site for the Web 2.0 community. We have a great dev team here in Barcelona (and partly Berlin) working on things considered impossible… so you’d better check out the just released version 2.0 of Splice with real-time software synthesizers and audio DSP effects!

(M. Karvonen / S. Kemilä)

The songs on this page are either already released somewhere or just material that I don’t see getting released ever. :) So, instead of leaving them on my hard drive to collect bit dust I decided to ‘release’ them here… I hope some people will enjoy them!

Trivia: All the songs before 2003 were composed on my old Amiga 4000 and Bars&Pipes Professional, except for ‘Miss Lemon’ and ‘spasticx’ which were done using OctaMED Professional and ‘Tout Près de Satan’ which was done with DigiBooster Pro / Fast Tracker 2 (PC). Oh, and of course the original 1995 version of CUD was done using ProTracker 2.3B. :) The later material has been composed with Logic Audio Platinum 5.5.1.
